ABOUT US

The value to the community of a well-conducted bowls club with proud traditions and high standard is incalculable. Founded in 1947 when a group of returned servicemen formed Ipswich United Services Bowls Club, there is more than 75 year tradition of providing an important recreational facility and a vital social outlet for people of all ages and means.

From its humble beginnings, it developed into a social and competitive bowling identity which was highly regarded throughout South East Queensland. This is best illustrated from 2000 - 2008, when the Club was the Premier League representative for Ipswich and surrounding areas. This prestigious event was won by the Club in 2003.

Building on the success, in 2011 Ipswich United Services hosted the Queensland Open Bowls Carnival which brought the cream of the bowling fraternity to Ipswich for two weeks; followed up in 2013 with Qualifying Rounds of the Australian Open Bowls Carnival being held at the club.

In 2014 the Club was sold to private investors. After purchase the complex was named the United Sports Club and bowls remains the resident on-site sporting activity. The Bowls Club subsequently amalgamated its men and women membership and officially became the United Bowls Club Incorporated.

United Bowls Club has a comprehensive schedule of social and competition Lawn Bowls. The men’s and women’s sections participate in pennant bowls, conduct championship events and tournaments, as well as provide free tuition and coaching for bowlers and prospective umpires. You can try your hand at social bowls, as well as competitive pennant bowls, club championships and tournaments, or corporate (barefoot) bowls.

The club can provide bowls for new bowlers to use and coaching is provided free of charge. If you’re thinking about taking up Lawn Bowls then our coaches will be delighted to introduce you to the game and  we’ll supply the bowls to get you started. Coaching classes are generally conducted on Saturday mornings which individual coaching is available at the other times by appointment.

Lawn Bowls is a fabulous game and vastly under-rated. It’s challenging whilst at the same time good fun. Any bowler will tell you they wished they’d taken up the sport years earlier that they did. Happily though, more and more young people are embracing the game and extremely glad that they have. It is interesting to note that the average age of the Australian Bowls team is less than that of the Australian cricket team. So why not get on the green?

Corporate bowls provide a great accompaniment to Christmas, birthdays and team building, so why not organise your friends and colleagues for a fun filled outing of barefoot bowls.
